E4 is Ed Holdsworth’s series of idents for the E4 digital TV channel. A one minute piece split into four15 second parts, individually separated by swells of white noise. The parts were first shown as separate units, and later the piece was transmitted as a whole. Also shown at the onedotzero5 festival.
For this piece we recorded various car effects ourselves. The train sounds
originate from early morning recording sessions by the trackside of London’s commuter trains, selected and edited for the most rocking train effects. We also recorded and processed children’s toys for the end sequence.
If you listen carefully, you will notice the various ways the noise cuts and swells in and out between the different scenes, which have been designed with great care to separate the 15 second cuts.
